Baptism is a symbolic step of obedience that a Christ follower takes where he or she publicly confesses Jesus as savior and identifies with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
Those who have personally placed their trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. The pattern in Scripture is people hearing the gospel of Jesus(1 Cor 15:3-4), believing in Jesus(Rom 10:13-14, 17), and being baptized(Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 8:12, Acts 16:34).
The English word “baptize” has its roots in the Greek word “baptizo,” which translates to “to dip” or “to immerse.” We embrace baptism by immersion because we really believe that the essence of “baptizo” calls for it. For instance, in Matthew 3, we see John the Baptist immerses Jesus, and here, the original term is indeed "baptizo." How incredible that Jesus himself underwent baptism through immersion! Not only does the meaning of the word lead us to immersion, but also the significance of the ordinance shines brightest through this practice. Baptism by immersion paints a picture of Jesus' life, death, burial, and resurrection for all who witness it.
